The Triangle
To the ancient Greeks, the triangle was far more than an elementary polygon; it was the foundational grammar of the cosmos, bridging the physical craft of architecture with the highest realms of metaphysics.
1. Pythagoras, the Hypotenuse, and the "Number-Soul"
For Pythagoras and his 6th-century BCE brotherhood in Croton, the doctrine was radical: "All is number" (arithmos). Numbers were not abstract counters; they possessed spatial form, personality, and divine reality. The universe was an arrangement of ratios, best exemplified by musical harmonics: halving a plucked string produced an octave (2:1), and dividing it in thirds produced a fifth (3:2).
When Pythagoras examined the right-angled triangle, he saw it as a physical, spatial relationship, not an algebraic equation. The word hypotenuse comes from the Greek hypoteinousa, literally meaning "stretching under"—the line spanning beneath the right angle.
2. Plato's Theory of Forms: The Ideal Triangle
Plato absorbed Pythagorean mysticism through Archytas of Tarentum, but elevated it into his Theory of Forms. Plato argued that the material world accessible to our senses is in perpetual flux—a world of becoming. Any triangle you draw in the sand, chisel into marble, or view on a screen is inherently flawed:
Its lines possess width and microscopic jaggedness.
Its angles only approximate 180^\circ.
It will eventually erode or disappear.
Yet, despite never having seen a perfect triangle with our eyes, our minds recognize triangularity immediately. Plato argued this is because our soul recalls the Form of the Triangle from the intelligible realm of Being—an immaterial, eternal, and immutable blueprint.
In the Republic, Plato places geometry on the Divided Line within the faculty of dianoia (discursive thought). Geometry acts as the crucial ladder lifting the philosopher's intellect out of sensory illusions (doxa) toward pure intellect (noesis). You use visible diagrams not to study the marks on the papyrus, but to contemplate the invisible Form they imitate.
